Just outside downtown near the present-day Los Angeles State Historic Park, architect Myron Hunt designed a Beaux Arts office for the Standard Oil Company of California in 1914. The building stood across the street from the company's large industrial site (now Metabolic Studio) and, in the 1970s, was transformed into the Woman's Building that housed galleries and studios for feminist artists. Although the firm designed in various styles, this house is an outstanding example of the best in Craftsman architecture. The Milwaukee Building Company became the Los Angeles-based architectural office of Meyer & Holler, an eminent firm responsible for the design of numerous Southern California landmark buildings. Designed by the firm William Pereira and Charles Luckman in the Miesian-style on Crown Hill, the building was the tallest building in Los Angeles when it was opened in April 1958. In 1996, the company moved to El Segundo and the space they vacated is now the Los Angeles Center Studios. That building, like much of the immediate neighborhood now caters to the predominantly Latino residents, although the charms of the Holler House still elude that demographic, much as it did that German lady in the ‘70s. Any visitor to Milwaukee should experience local beer and bowling, and Holler House is a very unique way to do it. They are the oldest sanctioned lanes in the country, making Holler House the first bowling alley in the United States, a fact that has been confirmed by the United States Bowling Congress. While Holler House endured through generational shifts – with even the next generations eager to keep the connection going, according to Haefke – fate brought unexpected new challenges over the past year. Catherine’s mother and the bar’s long-time owner Marcy passed away in December of 2019 at 93. Then, just as Haefke and the Holler House family felt like they were emotionally finding their footing once again, the world went out from under everyone’s feet with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I just have a very big love of this place,” Haefke said.
We also had lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant, and they were excellent. During our stay, we ate out at various restaurants in and around Phillipsburg, and the hotel restaurant was the best quality. Here structural elements, particularly exposed roof beams, rafters and notched brackets, are useful and decorative at the same time.

Marcy was wearing one of the centennial shirts the day of my visit. Holler House is a tavern located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but the two bowling lanes in the basement have a special claim to fame. The bar housing this elderly bowling alley was founded as Skowronski’s in 1908 by “Iron Mike” Skowronski, and is now run by his daughter-in-law, Marcy Skowronski. The name Holler House came about when a German woman complained about the noise that was coming out of the bar in the 1970s.
The bowling lanes are still the original wood, not a synthetic wood surface, and the pins are hand set by a real person. The two lanes feature the original wood, and are oiled with a spray can. Neighborhood kids reset the pins by hand (the standard tip for them is $3, or the bowler will hear about it from the bar’s elderly owner) and the bowling shoes are in a jumble under the stairs. There’s no room for seating, scores are kept by hand, and when the bar was cleaned for the first time in 40 years in 2008, in the lead up to its centennial, two 15-pound wooden bowling balls were uncovered. This boutique hotel is right on Great Bay Beach, St. Maarten, and offers spacious rooms with 30-inch flat-screen cable TVs.
Additional main-level highlights include a spacious family room spotlighted by a fireplace and access to a covered patio that’s ideal for al fresco dining. An adjoining gourmet kitchen is outfitted with custom cabinetry, quartzite countertops, dual islands and sinks, a service bar with double-sided seating, wine fridge, Thermador appliances and an accompanying breakfast nook. The bowling alley and bar have attracted some well-known visitors over the years. Bowling champion Earl Anthony has visited, and comedian Larry the Cable Guy.
In 1911 Thomas Szewczykowski dropped off a campaign poster at this bar during his successful run for 24th ward alderman. He’s long gone, but the sign is still on the wall of the Holler House, 2042 W. The tavern dates back to 1908, and it specializes in bottled beer (there is nothing on tap). It earned a shout-out in Esquire as one of the Best Bars in America.
The hotel is perfectly situated in the middle of Phillipsburg on Front Street, and the beach is immediately in the back of the hotel. The staff was professional, friendly, and responsive. During our stay, we asked for additional blankets, which were brought up to our room while we were on the beach. We also arranged to rent a car for the day, and the hotel staff made all of the arrangements; the car was delivered to the hotel and then picked up from the hotel once we were done. We included breakfast with our stay, and I highly recommend doing that, as we looked forward to the breakfast each day.
The shutdown and pandemic peak struck Holler House during the spring and summer, not prime business months for the bar and bowling alley, which typically hits its stride in the fall and winter and sometimes even closes during the slower summer months. Another aspect is Haefke’s attitude toward the business, which is more of a personal passion project and less of a profit-focused endeavor. This hotel is located right in the middle of the shopping area of Philipsburg just across the boardwalk from a beautiful beach on a bay with very calm turquoise water. The area is lively during the day but very quiet at night after the cruise ships leave. The downside of that is many restaurants are closed for dinner. The rooms are large and comfortable with spacious balconies.
