Plus, having him on the ballot may draw in moderate Republican and independent voters who remain sour on Trump. Now-incumbent GOP Rep. Mike Garcia beat Democrat Christy Smith in a 2019 special election to fill the seat, then twice more for full terms in 2020 and 2022. He will face off against George Whitesides, a fresh Democratic challenger, in November. Once solidly Republican, the district has been reconfigured by redistricting, and has undergone a political transition driven by younger, more diverse transplants from L.A. The district briefly switched from red to blue with former Rep. Katie Hill’s victory in 2018, but the young Democrat’s very public scandals and ultimate resignation helped hand the seat back to the GOP. The district’s new boundaries — which now include one of the largest concentrations of LGBTQ+ voters in the nation and liberal pockets of Californians in the desert — are far more friendly to Democrats.
A TOSS-UP RACE TAKES SHAPE FOR OPEN SEAT IN CENTRAL VALLEY FARM BELT
With Biden unpopular nationally, the race will test the depth of that transformation. Five of the six seats are currently held by Republicans, with four of those five in congressional districts that President Biden won in the 2020 election. Wealthy donors, the most Republican voters of any state in the nation, a deep bench of conservative leaders and an enormous cache of GOP presidential delegates mean the state is in play — even if it’s outside of public view.

Two years ago, this was the second-closest House race in the nation, with Duarte winning by just 564 votes. It will be one of the most avidly watched races in the country again this year. Calvert — who has represented parts of the Inland Empire for more than three decades — narrowly staved off Rollins last cycle in a race that was far more competitive than expected.
The News Gap
And the former president, who will speak to California GOP delegates in Anaheim on Friday and is holding at least two Southern California fundraisers this week, has long shown an affinity for the Golden State. “This will hamstring California’s Republican Party as voters wonder what decade the party is focused on ... The past over the future,” said Charles Moran, a Los Angeles County delegate and president of Log Cabin Republicans, a national group representing LGBTQ+ conservatives and their allies. A government shutdown could negatively affect Republican candidates’ chances in next year’s elections. A Morning Consult Pro poll released Tuesday indicated that 34% of voters would blame a government shutdown on congressional Republicans, compared with 23% who’d put the onus on Biden, and 21% who’d blame Democrats in Congress.
With no prominent Republican candidates, there is a strong likelihood that two Democrats will emerge from the March melee to face off in the November general election — as in 2022, when tech executive Rishi Kumar mounted an unsuccessful challenge to Eshoo. Stretching down the San Francisco peninsula to San Jose, this Silicon Valley-centric district is one of the wealthiest — and most expensive — in the entire country. Though majority white, it also has a large and politically influential Asian American community. The November race will be a rematch of the pair’s 2022 runoff, when Salas lost to Valadao by several thousand votes.

More than half of the residents are white, while Asians account for nearly a quarter of the population. “Having Garvey, I think, does spike or further encourage Republican voters to turn out, and more importantly, to vote down the ticket,” Blain said. But others, like Blain, argue that Garvey’s presence could hurt down-ballot Democrats.
Key Races
Democrats also were holding significant margins in several districts, including the Central Valley’s 9th, where Democratic Rep. Josh Harder had a nearly 13-point edge over Republican Tom Patti. The candidates initially made inflation and hate crimes against Asian Americans key issues. But the race took an ugly turn and most of it focused on accusation and recrimination. McCarthy’s deal to fund the government through mid-November passed the House with more support from Democrats than Republicans, demonstrating his inability to hold his caucus together on key votes. Garcia’s district needs 7,347 more people, according to Target Book calculations. It’s a competitive district, so whether it spreads into Democratic or Republican territory will probably determine whether Garcia survives the 2022 election. County and, combined, they’re short 615,000 people needed to justify that many seats. Which House seat evaporates in California will be the most important decision made by the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, created by voters 13 years ago to end the sordid practice of self-serving state legislators carving out their own districts. Prior to the GOP's 40-year sentence as the minority party, several of its speakers had risen to the top rung largely on their personal popularity among their colleagues.
He also served as ambassador to Germany from 2018 to 2020, and as special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations from 2019 to 2021. In 2020, Bannon and others were accused by a federal grand jury of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering through a campaign to build a border wall. However, New York state prosecutors pursued the allegations, and a trial is expected next year. The former chairman of Breitbart News, which was founded in a Westwood basement, was chief executive officer of Trump’s 2016 campaign, and after the election served as senior counselor to the then-president for several months. Trump plans to collect another round of campaign cash when he visits California this week. On Friday night, donors who contribute $100,000 can join the former president at a roundtable in Beverly Hills to raise funds for a super PAC backing his campaign.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.), who has won a series of close races in his Omaha-based swing district, said he’d be happy to have Johnson come in and campaign for him. Some Republicans who backed the aid encountered little resistance from voters, who were far more willing to embrace it — and less interested in ousting the speaker over it — than their right-wing colleagues. Valadao is also being challenged from the right by a fellow Republican, former Fresno City Council member Chris Mathys. President Biden won the district in the 2020 election and it’s poised to be one of the most competitive districts in the country in November, unless a Democrat fails to make the runoff. Census every 10 years, California lost a congressional seat and many of the districts have changed.
The winner of the special election will serve in Congress until January 2025, when the next congressional term begins. With Republicans holding a razor-thin three-seat majority and California home to several swing seats, control of Congress in 2025 could very well be decided by voters in Golden State suburbs. Calvert brings the advantages of incumbency but his conservative credentials and support from Trump could be liabilities in a district that includes many transplanted Los Angeles residents and the city of Palm Springs, which has a large concentration of LGBTQ voters. They are the only candidates on the March 5 primary election ballot, setting up a rematch in the 13th District, which has a prominent Democratic tilt and a large Latino population. But the most likely voters tend to be white, older, more affluent homeowners, as is the case statewide. Districts in the sprawling region sometimes called America’s salad bowl typically have significant Democratic registration edges, but those seats are often held by Republicans.
San Joaquin Valley
California voters see Jan. 6 as a subplot compared with issues such as abortion and the economy ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The stances of Kevin Kiley and Kermit Jones, candidates in a vast California congressional district, on abortion, healthcare, immigration, gun laws. A case in point is Rep. David Valadao, a Republican who has endured despite facing steep registration deficits. Orange County’s 47th District runs along the California coast southeast of Los Angeles and was once the heart of “Reagan Country,” a region long synonymous with conservative politics and known for its ties to the former president.
Democrats and durability
She comes in at fifth on the longevity roster, having served one day shy of eight years from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. In 1989 Speaker Jim Wright of Texas resigned under pressure following revelations about a book deal the House Ethics Committee saw as circumventing fundraising rules. Longworth's successor, John "Cactus Jack" Garner of Texas, left the office after just over a year to be Franklin Roosevelt's first vice president. Prior to that, the last Republican speaker had been Nicholas Longworth of Ohio, who died in 1931. Technically, he died as speaker, but his party lost its majority before the next Congress convened and elected a Democrat to the job.
TRUMP SUPPORTER SEEKS THIRD UPSET NORTH OF DEMOCRATIC LOS ANGELES
This time, Rollins will be aided by the full backing of the Democratic Party and far more fundraising support. The fact that Tran is the son of Vietnamese immigrants and has a Vietnamese surname could help him build name recognition but won’t be determinative, DeSipio said. The district includes Orange County’s Little Saigon and Vietnamese Americans account for about 17% of voters, according to Political Data, Inc. Democrats have a narrow registration advantage, although no party preference registrants account for nearly a quarter of voters. Biden won the district by more than 10 percentage points over Trump in 2020, according to data from California Target Book.
The reason that isn’t likely, however, is because there aren’t that many GOP House seats in California to lose. California will lose a congressional seat next year, probably one now held by a Los Angeles County Democrat. House Republicans are seeking to unite their unruly majority around an evergreen conservative cause, devising a strict response to the wave of pro-Palestinian protests that have roiled college campuses across the country in recent weeks. Most of them served in that long stretch when their party held the majority for four decades. The most recent Democrat, however, is Nancy Pelosi, still a House member and the House speaker emerita.
The California Democratic Party-endorsed candidate dropped out before the filing deadline to avoid that scenario and threw his support behind Wood, who lost to McCarthy in 2022. Though McCarthy declined to certify some of the 2020 presidential election results, Johnson went a step further and rallied more than 100 Republicans to back his brief endorsing a lawsuit to overturn the election. Johnson has repeatedly backed measures to ban abortion nationwide and worked for a nonprofit, labeled an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, that defended the state-sanctioned sterilization of transgender people. Beyond the partisan sound and fury, there are also several fiercely competitive local House races in overwhelmingly Democratic districts, including the battles to fill departing Reps. Adam B. Schiff’s and Grace F. Napolitano’s seats in the Los Angeles area.

McCarthy and Johnson are both conservative Christians. Only one is on the ‘front lines of the culture war’
Stretching from northern Los Angeles County into the vast Angeles National Forest, this district is home to California’s glamorous art and entertainment industry. Including the Walt Disney Studios and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, film lovers in the City of Angels can hit most tourist attractions without leaving the district. Most are white, but the district boasts a sizable Asian and Latino population. While flush with campaign cash, Simon faces challengers Jennifer Tran, a professor and daughter of Vietnam War refugees; Tony Daysog, vice mayor of Alameda; and Denard Ingram, who serves on the city of Oakland’s rent board.
With 62 percent of the votes counted, Mr. Kennedy was beating Mr. Dickson by 34 percentage points, 67 to 33. Trump lost the popular vote in 2016 and George W. Bush lost it in 2000, yet both won enough support in the electoral college to win the White House. Critics argue that former President Trump’s success in changing state party rules, including in California, to benefit his candidacy harms voters. California has the most delegates of any state in the nation — roughly 14% of the number required for a Republican presidential candidate to secure the party’s nomination. “Even though it’s a very blue voter state, California still continues to produce a lot of really important dynamics in Republican politics,” he said. Brulte also noted that a number of the former president’s top donors live in California, and that he has raised an enormous amount of money in the state, as candidates of both major parties do.
That district, the 41st, is about equally divided between Republicans and Democrats. Former legislator Scott Baugh, who narrowly lost to Porter in 2022, is the leading Republican, while two Democrats are dueling to get on the November ballot, state Sen. David Min and Joanna Weiss, who founded an organization that promotes progressive candidates. Rep. Mike Garcia is the last Republican congressman anchored in heavily Democratic Los Angeles County. The once-conservative 27th District running through suburbs and high desert north of Los Angeles has become one of the country’s most competitive battlefields. One race that will have some new blood this year, after the same pair of candidates dueled in three previous elections, is California’s 27th Congressional District in northern Los Angeles County. In the San Joaquin Valley, there were last-minute fears that a bruising primary battle would lock Democrats out of one of the races where they have the best chance of flipping a seat, but those concerns proved overblown.
District where GOP volunteers fanned out for Baugh on primary morning, Democrats had sunk millions into a bruising primary battle between state Sen. Dave Min and fellow Democrat Joanna Weiss. Min ultimately emerged victorious, but only after surviving a barrage of negative advertising centered on his 2023 arrest for driving while intoxicated — arguably a gift to Republicans ahead of his fall battle with Baugh. The charismatic Porter will be out of the House picture after a failed Senate run; her seat is one of the National Republican Congressional Committee’s three offensive targets in California and top priorities. It’s also where about two dozen GOP faithful gathered on the morning of election day, bowing their heads for a quick prayer and pledging allegiance to a portable flag before turning their attention to Jessica Millan Patterson, chair of the California Republican Party. Barring divine intervention or the West Coast falling into the sea, President Biden will handily win California in the November election.
She expected her Republican colleagues would join her push to remove Mr. Johnson after getting an earful from their constituents. Immediately after the vote last weekend, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, the right-wing Republican who threatened to oust Mr. Johnson for allowing the vote, predicted that her colleagues who backed the measure would have hell to pay. “We’re bankrupt, and if we can afford to send that kind of money to another country, we’re paying too much taxes,” Mr. Kirk said. More than 500 miles west, in Iowa City, Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, a vulnerable Republican who won her district by six votes in 2020, had a similar experience. “Anything we can do to support the Ukrainian victory over the Russian invasion would be a positive thing for the world,” said Randy Manley, a retiree from Strongsville, Ohio, who said he planned to vote for Mr. Trump in November.
According to one Gallup poll conducted in March, 64% of Republicans approve of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, compared with 18% of Democrats and 29% of independents who said the same. Those figures dwarf Hostettler’s own fundraising numbers, as his campaign has reported bringing in $40,635 in donations across the election cycle to date. Messmer brought in nearly 20 times as much, reporting $763,290 in contributions so far. In some bright red districts, voters’ frustration was palpable over the weeklong recess after the vote.
Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, who had already spent years raising money as he waited for this seat to open up, quickly jumped into the race and boasts Eshoo’s support. But all of them may ultimately trail Sam Liccardo, the former mayor of San Jose, which comprises the largest chunk of the district, providing him with a significant base of supporters. California is home to 10 races rated as competitive by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report — five of them in districts that are represented by Republicans but that President Biden won in 2020.
With Kevin McCarthy heading for the exits, his Republican colleagues are bracing for a falloff in campaign support and loss of granular institutional knowledge that could leave them at a disadvantage heading into next fall’s elections. But other outside groups have rallied around his opponent Mesmer; the America Leads Action Super Pac has spent roughly $2m opposing Hostettler and more than $100,000 supporting Mesmer. A campaign ad from America Leads Action accuses Hostettler of advancing reckless fiscal policies during his time in Congress.
Speaking to a group of Republican donors in Orlando on Tuesday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis touted his strength in the suburbs, his rural turnout effort and his appeal with Latino voters just one week after he cruised to victory in his reelection effort. Republican Sen. Rick Scott, the NRSC chair, said in a statement that the Senate GOP campaign arm is “more than happy” to discuss its spending with senators. Politico first reported that a couple of lawmakers — Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Thom Tillis — privately called for an audit of the NRSC on Tuesday. Utah Senator Mitt Romney said Wednesday that he has not called for an “audit” of the NRSC. But he would like to see an evaluation of its “initiatives,” “investments,” “fundraising” and payments to political consultants.
She returned to work as a teacher and raise children, but says it's hard to see her friends move away over time. Mussomeli had roughly 16,000 residents in the 1950s, he explains, but populations declined through the '80s as young people left for university and better career opportunities in northern Italy. Immortalized by Renaissance artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo, the landscapes of Italy have inspired beauty-seekers the world over to come, rest, and contemplate. Indeed, many painters of the time could make their living on landscape pieces alone.

She first learned about the program from her husband, who'd read about it online. She booked her hotel and flight out to Sicily to see if the opportunity was too good to be true. The 1-euro campaign was first proposed in 2008 by TV personality Vittorio Sgarbi, then the mayor of Salemi in southern Sicily, where homes were destroyed in a 1968 earthquake. For Rubia Daniels, though, the dilapidated building in Sicily also served as an exciting chance to build the home of her dreams — and it cost her almost nothing to get started. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks.
She then bought the building next door through a private sale with the owner for 22,000 euros, or just over $23,000. Daniels is building the house of her dreams, "which I wouldn't be able to do back in California because the cost would be much higher," she says. Daniels plans to visit her Mussomeli home for vacations and split her time between California and Sicily in retirement. So far, she's focused on fixing up her vacation home and initially estimated renovations to cost $20,000.

She's wary of fielding questions from foreigners like herself who want to buy an old home and turn it into an investment property. "I'm very grateful that I do not know anybody doing that, because I do not want this to be a village of Airbnbs," she says. Daniels feels strongly that historic renovation programs are beneficial in part because they're sustainable. Around the world, "we have destroyed so much of the environment building things instead of using what exists," she says. Houses that aren't being sold for 1 euro range between 5,000 to 25,000 euros, or $5,250 to $26,250. StreetTo volunteers say they list houses at a sustainable pace to avoid gentrification and out-of-control housing prices.

Meanwhile, there are over 100 premium houses currently on the market, Milazzo says. Many of them are being sold by families who've moved away or inherited multiple properties and see an influx of interested foreigners as an opportunity to make a profit. Large-scale renovations mean more jobs for carpenters, plumbers, electricians and other construction workers. The project even brought a wave of Argentinian doctors who moved there and resolved a shortage of health-care workers.
On one of the final days of the auction, Tabbone placed her bid of 5,555 euros for a property, sight unseen. "I thought it was too good to be true," Tabbone says, "but I checked when I saw the name Sambuca and took a look, and it was the same village that my great-grandfather came from in 1902 to the United States." The body, which has yet to be identified, was found on the second floor amid the rubble as firefighters demolished the top floors of the brick building. The body was pulled out of the building’s open facade by an excavator that was also gripping a mattress, according to witnesses. Some 80 firefighters from local communities rushed to assist, officials said. “I brought some clothes for the people who will probably come back to see if there are any personal belongings left, they’re probably not, and then I’ll direct them to some of the resources in the city,” MacDonald said. The fire in a rooming house on Acushnet Avenue was reported just after 3 p.m.

Fire in New Bedford home displaces 3 - WLNE-TV (ABC6)
When emergency crews arrived, multiple people were hanging out of windows needing to be rescued, New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said. One of the people who died has been identified as Manuel Moreira, a 59-year-old who lived on the fourth floor, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday. A deadly fire at a New Bedford rooming house Tuesday started accidentally, likely caused by a microwave or wall outlet, fire officials said Friday. By 6 p.m., fire crews had the fire under control but “continued to extinguish hot spots for hours afterward,” maintaining a presence outside the house overnight, Ostroskey’s office said.

The building was a 31-unit rooming house, with each unit locking individually and each floor sharing a common bathroom, according to residents. Fire investigators said the fire started in Room 205, located at the left rear of the second floor. Investigators were able to rule out all potential causes except an event involving a microwave in that location or the wall outlet it was plugged into.
Electrical fires are the second-leading cause of death for residential fires in Massachusetts, according to the state fire marshal. One person who lived on the third floor said that there were no sprinklers in the building at the time of the fire. A family member of one resident said that the hatch to the fire escape ladder was locked, forcing some to jump from the second-story wooden balcony. “Firefighters immediately began conducting rescues over ground ladders and five people were transported from the scene for medical care,” the statement said.

(WJAR) — The body of a second victim was recovered Wednesday from the scene of a massive fire at a rooming house in New Bedford. "I know at least five are in the hospital right now with various types of injuries," he said.
“When I got here, there was flames coming out of the second floor going up to the third and the balcony, facing west, the second floor was totally engulfed," MacDonald said. Witnesses described a horrific scene, including seeing someone who was severely burned jump out of a second-story window. The State Fire Marshal's Office said investigators determined that the fire began in a second-floor bedroom.
Fire crews reported seeing heavy smoke and flames and occupants hanging from the windows and jumping from the building to escape the danger inside. More than an hour later, as Sky5 flew over the four-story building, firefighters were dousing the building with water from all sides. The water was pouring out from doors on the ground floor but flames and heavy smoke continued.
Two other adults were able to escape the building and were also transported for serious injuries. Both victims were transported to a hospital, where the man was pronounced dead while the woman is in critical condition. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — A fire tore through a New Bedford home Thursday afternoon killing one person and leaving three people in critical condition, fire officials said. The news came shortly after the first victim, fourth-floor resident Manuel Moreira, was identified.
A second deceased victim inside the charred remains of a New Bedford rooming-style house was found by investigators on Wednesday as they seek to determine what caused a Tuesday fire that destroyed the building. The building was previously owned by Dennis Arsenault, who owns at least one other rooming house in New Bedford. In May 2022, Arsenault resigned as sole trustee of the real estate firm, registered as “Royal Crown Realty Trust,” and made Kenneth Hoffman the trustee.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army Disaster Team were seen Tuesday night helping out residents, the station reported. The fire quickly grew to five alarms, drawing some 80 firefighters from local communities to the scene, officials said. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell told media at the scene two residents of the building were missing as of Tuesday night, according to WCVB.
One of the victims was identified as 59-year-old Manual Moreira, who lived on the fourth floor. Hoffman, who residents said owns multiple rooming houses in New Bedford, could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. Residents said that the building was under “mostly cosmetic” renovation, but that no work was being done on the property Tuesday.
No updates were provided on the condition of the hospitalized residents. Of the two victims, one has been identified by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office as 59-year-old Manuel Moreira, who lived on the fourth floor of the building. The other victim, who was found during excavation efforts on Wednesday, remains unidentified, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said in a press release. Two people have died after a deadly fire tore through a four-story rooming house in New Bedford Tuesday afternoon. Their body was found after investigators used heavy equipment to sort through debris and remove parts of the building, which partially collapsed. Heavy smoke was visible and residents were jumping out, or hanging from, windows of the four-story building at 1305 Acushnet Ave., said Jake Wark, a spokesman for the state Department of Fire Services.
This has led bicycle shops such as Scorpion Bike Wheels, a boutique-type bike shop, to offer custom bike frames and components to customers who need their bikes to fit their bodies for ultimate usage. "I help people with physical limitations for the bicycle,” said Tony Branco, 65, whose local business offers custom-designed frames and bike fitting services at 105 State Road. When firefighters arrived, they said they found the back of the two-story home on fire.
Investigators were able to rule out all potential causes except an accidental event involving a microwave in a second-floor apartment or the wall outlet it was plugged into, according to a press release. The microwave had been in use a short time before the fire broke out. The Salvation Army will be meeting with other local emergency management partners and survivors to determine additional needs this week. MacFarlane said they work with families all the time that have been displaced whether they need clothing, food or other assistance or even just somebody to listen for emotional spiritual care. Due to their familiarity with the facility and the team in New Bedford, and knowing some of the people there, they were also able to offer emotional and spiritual care. There was also a prayer circle, and a lot of people welcomed that support.
In April of 2021, two people died and more than 40 were displaced when a late night fire sparked in an alley between two buildings and set both on fire. The charred remains of that fire are less than one block away from the scene of Tuesday’s rooming house fire. From Sky 5, large flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from the upper floors of the white home, and fire crews used hoses from multiple ladder trucks to extinguish the flames. Two people were killed and five others hospitalized when fire broke out at the building on Acushnet Avenue. The State Fire Marshal's Office said investigators determined the fire started in a room on the second floor. They believe the fire was caused either by a microwave that was in use before the fire started, or the wall outlet it was plugged into at the time.
With its convenient location near Route 140, this home is ideally situated for easy commuting. How to help residents of New Bedford rooming house fire
The roof of the building collapsed and Kruger said firefighters had to treat every side of the building as a potential collapse zone. “All I saw is smoke, I was trying to make it down the stairs, but couldn't make it down those stairs. The fire was coming up too quickly and the smoke was too, too much,” he said. The remains of resident Wayne Bourdon, 63, were recovered Wednesday afternoon.

On Tuesday afternoon, he said at least five people were transported to the hospital, some with serious conditions. He said the injuries were varied, the result of smoke inhalation, fire and jumping out of the windows. One person was killed and five people were taken to the hospital in a massive fire at a rooming house in New Bedford Tuesday afternoon that drew scores of firefighters to the scene, officials said. It marks at least the fourth major fire in the last two years to devastate the tightly packed three-decker neighborhood.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s office identified the man killed in the fire as Manuel Moreira, 59, who lived on the fourth floor of the rooming house. NEW BEDFORD — At least one person has died and two people remained unaccounted for Tuesday night, after a massive fire quickly engulfed a four-story brick rooming house in New Bedford’s North End. "Our thoughts are still with the families who lost loved ones, the residents who were injured, and those who lost all their belongings," said New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger. New Bedford firefighters saw heavy flames showing from the second story of the house when they arrived at the scene.

Reports were called in saying fire and smoke were coming from the back of the house. The New Bedford Fire Department said Thursday the displaced residents were being assisted by the Red Cross. In a joint statement of the New Bedford Fire Department and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, the now-two deceased victims were identified as Radames Lopez Mendrez, 78, and Eneida Gonzalez Mangual, 79. The American Red Cross of Massachusetts is assisting five displaced residents. The cause of the fire was not immediately known and remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshals Office. The city and the fire department have yet to release information on whether the building had recently been inspected or if it was up to date on all fire codes.
According to Connie Correia, the social services manager for the Salvation Army in New Bedford, they served an estimated 27 people. They are also working with the city and housing department and a team of non-government organization to help find housing on a permanent basis. The fire conditions in that building rapidly deteriorated, said Kruger. "That type of construction lends to that — lots of void spaces, lots of places for heat and smoke to build up,” according to a WCVB report. Around 80 firefighters responded to the fire, with other local agencies coming to assist.
The Red Cross and Salvation Army Disaster Team were seen Tuesday night helping out residents. The roof of the building collapsed, making it more difficult to stop the flames. He’s currently working with community organizations to help get everyone impacted back on their feet.
Collectively, they determined that the fire started in Room 205, located at the left rear of the second floor. Dartmouth, Acushnet and Fairhaven fire departments provided mutual aid to assist with the fire. Westport, Marion, Wareham, Lakeville and Freetown provided ambulance services as an ambulance task force. "The fire had control of that building when we arrived. There's no question about that, it was on all four floors. In the hallways. It actually burned through a stairwell when they were in there," said Kruger.
The Salvation Army’s emergency disaster services team will be meeting with several fire survivors today, according to Heather MacFarlane, spokesperson for the Salvation Army in Massachusetts. The recovery came as investigators are using heavy equipment throughout the day to delayer and examine the badly damaged structure. NEW BEDFORD — A massive fire at a rooming house on Acushnet Avenue on Tuesday has claimed the life of two residents. Phillip MacDonald said that his brother and his brother's girlfriend lived in one of the building's units, right next to where the fire started. In an update late Tuesday, New Bedford officials said that a man died in the fire and that at least five were taken to a hospital, two of whom were in very serious condition. There was no immediate word on injuries or what may have started the fire.
The fire chief said at least five tenants were injured in the fire, which quickly engulfed the building and shrouded the neighborhood in thick, black smoke. New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said about five others were taken to a hospital, with two people in serious condition. “The alarm kept going off, and I tried to make it out of my room but all I saw was smoke. I tried to make it down those stairs, but I couldn’t,” said Jason Gilmore, who lived in the building. The victim’s identity has not been released pending family notification, Wark said.

NEW BEDFORD — Firefighters discovered a second dead body Wednesday afternoon in the charred aftermath of a fire that ripped through a four-story rooming house in New Bedford’s North End. A second victim was recovered Wednesday from the rubble of a rooming house in New Bedford, where a massive fire the day before caused “catastrophic damage,” according to the state fire marshal’s office. Gilmore came back to the scene less than 24 hours after jumping from the second floor of the burning building.
AI is terrifying, and it has all sorts of problems, but this technology stuff can really work. Deepfakes can be great if you're trying to do a reunion Christmas special of Ghosts in 20 years' time. But this one has allowed us to be a bit softer about it, a bit more attached. We see a lot of the same crew come back, and we stay in touch with them and that's been really special. But it's quite good to get a contrast, because then you understand how unusual that is. Normally, if you've got a good year of work, you're meeting hundreds of different people, and going to new places, and making new friends, and then not seeing them for months and months.
The cast of Ghosts is so insanely talented. What's it like working on set with them all?
There are bigger storylines here, as life changes for Alison and Mike, and decisions must be made about the future of the ever-crumbling Button House. We rarely get to see stories on TV about people struggling financially, in any ordinary sense. Most fictional characters seem to live in pristine Victorian semis with vast kitchen extensions, no matter whether they are an investment banker or a teaching assistant. And if they are evidently strapped for cash, it’s usually because they’ve gambled their lives away or rejected their former life as a gangland boss.
Queen of comedy Charlotte Ritchie on Ghosts: ‘It’s loving, uncynical – and people fall over’
He is just going to crack on with it. He's done trying to see what she sees or trying to imagine what it's like; it's just a way of life now. The main development is that they are thinking more about their life choices and what their future looks like. Because they have very similar senses of humour, but also different leanings. I don't think they're egotistical people. They are real team players, and that really shines through.
Ghosts Series 5, Episode 1 - Fools - British Comedy Guide
There is something quite rich about the idea of people with very different lives and very different viewpoints being stuck together. That felt very contemporary in terms of how heated conversations are between people with different standpoints. If people inhabit a space together, and look in each other's eyes, they can try their best to maintain a hardness towards each other, but some of that softens and breaks down because we're all people in the end.
Ghosts is back! Where do we find Mike and Alison?
But finding practical resolution to these stories is hard. And so we decided as a group that it's probably best to quit while we're ahead, to go out on a high and to varnish the legacy that we've created. In many ways, it feels like total madness and a very silly decision indeed. But I think it's right for us as a group.
Ghosts Series 5, Episode 2 - Home - British Comedy Guide
If you're feeling sad about that, don't worry, so are the creators and cast of the show. Season 4 premieres in the UK on Friday 23rd September on BBC One, with new episodes airing weekly and streaming on BBC iPlayer. “They’ve become such close and good friends.
I think there’ll be some sadness about the show ending and we're pleased about that, to be honest, because I'd much rather that than people turning off already, pleased that it's over. I think that is a good sign that people will be sad. I just hope that people think the show has been fulfilling. There is a surface to everyone, and then there’s what’s underneath.
Of course, there’s nothing funny about death or the reality of our very short lifespans. From the creators and stars of Horrible Histories, the hit comedy series returns to BBC One for a fifth run of episodes next month. Charlotte Ritchie told RadioTimes.com that she had mixed feelings to the development at first, as she was surprised by how closely Alison's story was mirroring that of many of her real-life friends. I have a front row seat to some of the best people there are doing this at the moment, and it's really nice. I think they're all phenomenal, and it's easy to forget that. You can start to really take that for granted when you do it a lot, and you work with really great people.

But you just see this nice little metaphor for different people living amongst each other and learning from each other. We were already sort of feeling that from the second half of that series. You really miss her – I think not just because she's a character that you grew to love, but I think the kind of humour that Katy brings is so specific, and so uniquely funny in its own way. It’s also just shot better and more cinematic. Rooted in a joyously absurd sense of humor, the strength of both shows is how they transcend the initial gimmick and create space for character-based comedy that’s not at odds with the occasional poignant moment.
“Alison and Mike are tested in this series. They do row and get on each other’s nerves a bit. But they’re still very, very strong as a couple.
“Been there, done it, got the T-shirt, mate,” he says; the way Jim Howick delivers the line had me in an inexplicable fit of giggles. The language is luscious, as always, particularly when it comes to Lady Button, who disapproves of Alison’s “new” tattoos. “My own kith and kin, branded like some lowly navvy, painted like a tawdry jezebel,” she hoots, ripely.
There’s no indication that CBS intends to air subsequent seasons of the UK series, but I hope the network considers it. TV could use more comedies where the camaraderie is actually funny. The myriad of ghosts who share the house with them also have their own views on the mysterious visitor.
Certainly, the cast have plundered the set for memorabilia. Ritchie has snaffled Alison’s jumpers, Smith-Bynoe took Mike’s monocle, Howe-Douglas has Lady Button’s rings and Ben Willbond has taken the Captain’s stick. Rickard proudly holds up Humphrey’s severed head to camera.
By incorporating various techniques, such as carving and layering, she creates a sense of depth and dimension in her artworks. As an individual with a profound admiration for art, I have repeatedly been drawn to the vibrant and dynamic works of Iris Eshet Cohen. Her ability to celebrate color and motion within her artwork is truly captivating.
